EEC IV QUICK TEST - SERVICE CODE 83 - 2.3L TURBO - ERROR IN KEY ON/ENGINE OFF (KOEO) SELF-TEST

FORD 1987 THUNDERBIRD

The EEC IV service code 83 (high speed electro-drive fan control circuit - HEDEF) may be in error during Key On/Engine Off (KOEO) self-test. This may be caused by a processor strategy fault and should be verified using the following service/diagnostic procedure.

1. Electrically disconnect the boost control solenoid and rerun (KOEO). This will cause a service code. Ignore the code 81 at this time.

2. If the service code 83 is no longer present with the boost control solenoid disconnected, the high speed electro-drive fan control (HEDF) is okay.

3. If the service code 83 remains present along with a code 81, then service as necessary per EEC IV Quick-Test as outlined in the 1987 Shop Manual, Volume H.

NOTE: The above conditions (Steps 2 or 3) require the reconnection of the boost control solenoid and a rerun of the self-test to make sure the boost control solenoid is properly reconnected.
