Crankshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation

*** Updated by TSB #915B19, March 22, 1991

Dual Hall Sensor:

The crankshaft timing sensor, located on the front of the engine near the crankshaft, is a dual Hall effect magnetic switch. The sensor is actuated by the dual vane cup on the crankshaft pulley hub assembly. This sensor generates two separate signals, the Cylinder Identification (CID), and Profile Ignition Pick-up (PIP). The CID signal is used to synchronize the ignition coils and the PIP signal provides base timing and rpm information. Initial base timing is set at 10° BTDC and is not adjustable.
