Starting System: Description and Operation

The Battery, Starter Motor, Clutch Interlock Switch (MTX) or Neutral Safety Switch (ATX), and Ignition Switch make up the starting system.

When the Ignition Switch is in the START position, current flows from the Battery through the 25A MAIN Fuse Link, the Ignition Switch, and Clutch Interlock Switch or Neutral Safety Switch to energize the Starter Relay. Current flows directly from the Battery through the contacts of the Starter Relay to engage the Starter motor and rotate the engine flywheel.

BATTERY AND CABLE CHECK

^ Check condition of Battery; recharge or replace as necessary.

^ Check battery posts and cable lugs.

^ Check cable terminals at engine ground and Starter Motor; clean and tighten as necessary. Verify that cable strands are securely attached in terminals (cables are tight when eyelets cannot be easily turned by hand).
