H: Brake Warning Never/Always ON

Pinpoint Test H - Brake Warning Never/Always On

H1 - Check Instrument Cluster For Warning

NOTE: Make sure brake fluid is at specified level.

- Check warnings to determine if the warning is always on or never on.

Is warning always on?

YES GO to H5.
NO GO to H2.

H2 - Check Brake Fluid Level Switch Voltage Supply

- Turn ignition switch to OFF.
- Disconnect connector at brake fluid level switch.
- Connect a jumper wire from circuit 977 (P/W) at the brake fluid level switch connector to ground. Turn ignition switch to RUN.

Is brake warning lamp illuminated?

YES GO to H3.
NO GO to H4.

H3 - Check For Open Circuits

- Using an ohmmeter, check continuity in circuit 57 (BK) from brake fluid level switch to ground, circuit 977 (P/W) to ignition switch and circuit 512 (T/LB) to parking brake switch.

Is continuity present?

YES REPLACE brake fluid level switch. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.
NO SERVICE open in circuit 977 (P/W), 57 (BK) or 512 (T/LB). RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.

H4 - Check For Open Circuit/Open Bulb

- Turn ignition switch to OFF.
- Disconnect instrument cluster.
- Using an ohmmeter, check continuity in circuit 977 (P/W) between connector pin C2-1O and brake fluid level switch.

Is continuity present?

YES REPLACE brake warning bulb in instrument cluster. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.
NO SERVICE circuit 977 (P/W) for open. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.

H5 - Check Harness For Short Circuit 977 (P/W)

- Put transmission in PARK.
- Release parking brake.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF.
- Disconnect connector at the brake fluid level switch.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN.

Is brake warning lamp illuminated?

YES CHECK circuit 977 (P/W) for shorts. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.
NO GO to H6.

H6 - Check Brake Fluid Level Switch Ground

- Make sure that:
- Parking brake is OFF
- park brake switch
- ignition switch is in OFF
- brake fluid level is proper.
- Using a multimeter, check for ground on Circuit 57 (BK) in fluid level switch connector.

Is there an open circuit?

YES REPLACE brake fluid level switch. REFER to Lighting and Horns for daytime running lamps system switches. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.
NO SERVICE circuit 57 (BK) for shorts or damaged concern (if equipped). RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.
