Attachment III - Technical Instructions
Affected Vehicles:Certain 1992 to 1997 model year Crown Victorias equipped with the heavy duty suspension package, and used in severe duty applications (i.e. Police and Taxi vehicles).
Inspection
Open hood to the full position. If the vehicle's striker compares to FIGURE 1, obtain Service Kit F6AZ-16K689-BA.
If the vehicle's striker compares to FIGURE 2, obtain Service Kit F6AZ-16K689-AA.
NOTE:
If you are unable to perform either of these repairs due to previous modification, call 1-800-325-5621 Be prepared to describe the condition in detail.
Repair Procedure # 1
1. Open hood to the full open position.
2. Apply suitable tape to the back of each rivet to prevent rivet waste from falling inside the hood assembly.
3. Cover engine, fenders and grill with blanket to catch any rivet waste.
CAUTION
Use caution not to damage the underhood sheet metal.
4. Using a suitable grinder, grind off the striker plate rivet heads.
5. Using a suitable punch and hammer, knock out the remaining rivet material. Remove the striker plate, tape and rivet waste from the hood assembly.
NOTE:
The new striker plate must be positioned with the rolled edge facing up and the hole pattern aligned with the holes in the hood. Also, the part number stamped on the striker plate must be located toward the front of the vehicle. See Figure 3.
6. Position the striker plate, and secure using all four (4) supplied rivets.
7. Remove blanket. Verify proper latch function and hood alignment.
Repair Procedure # 2
1. Open hood to the full open position.
2. Apply suitable tape to the back of each rivet to prevent rivet waste from falling inside the hood assembly.
3. Cover engine, fenders and grill with blanket to catch any rivet waste.
CAUTION
Apply tape to the drill bit to create a "drill stop" no more than one (1) inch from the tip to prevent damage to the outer hood panel.
4. Using a 1/4 drill bit, drill out the striker plate rivet heads. It necessary, use a suitable punch and hammer to remove any remaining rivet material.
5. Remove the striker plate and any rivet waste from the hood assembly.
6. Insert the nutplate through the opening in the hood reinforcement. Position the offset bolt hole in the nutplate to the lower left as shown in Figure 4. This should place the locating pins in the corresponding holes in the hood reinforcement. Pull outward on the nutplate to seat. You should hear a "pop" when the locating pins lock into the hood reinforcement.
7. Position the new striker plate with the rubber isolator contacting the hood reinforcement, and the offset bolt hole in the lower left. Secure with supplied retaining bolts. Tighten bolts to 8.9-12.1 Nm (6.5-8.9 ft-lb).
8. Remove blanket. Verify proper latch function and hood alignment.
