Subject:
Safety Recall 96S45 - Certain 1995-1996 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor and Commercial Application Vehicles. Also Town Car With Limousine Prep and Trailer Tow Packages For Inspection, Lubrication and, if Necessary, Replacement of the Steering Gear Sector Shaft Arm (Pitman Arm)

Affected Vehicles
Certain 1995-1996 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor and commercial application vehicles built at St.Thomas Assembly Plant from 8/2/94 through 4/10/96; also certain Town Cars with limousine prep and trailer tow packages built at Wixom Assembly Plant from 8/1/94 through 4/11/96.

Reasons For Recall
On some of these cars, the pitman arm bearing may become excessively worn allowing the pitman arm "ball stud" to separate from the pitman arm without warning. Should separation occur, the driver would likely experience loss of steering control. Under certain circumstances, a vehicle crash could result.

To correct this condition, the pitman arm will be inspected and lubricated or, if necessary, replaced.
