New Generation Star (NGS) Tester Useage

NOTE: The Rotunda Service Bay Diagnostic System (SBDS) 001-00001 or equivalent, may also be used to diagnose this system.

Diagnostics for this system require use of the Rotunda New Generation Star (NGS) Tester 007-00500 or equivalent. The module controlling the system being diagnosed communicates with the data link connector located beneath the instrument panel.

Connect the data link connector communication cable to the NGS or equivalent. Attach the NGS and communication cable to the DLC beneath the instrument panel. Select the proper vehicle model and year from the NGS menu. You may then access the testing area of the NGS menu required to diagnose this vehicle system.

The on-demand self test is used to check the operation of the module's internal circuitry along with all of its subsystem output circuits, which are automatically diagnosed. Total test time takes approximately five seconds. Testing checks the following items in order:

1. Turn on the THEFT Indicator (remains on for five seconds minimum).
2. The control module will transmit the RF power signal to the electronics in the ignition key to power the ignition key circuit. If the transceiver module is operating properly, the encoded ignition key will transmit back the key code; otherwise DTCs will be logged in memory after ten unsuccessful tries.
3. If the ignition key data is received properly, and matches the code stored in memory, the control module outputs the vehicle enable message. NGS should read this output (Function Read) as the powertrain control module (PCM) normally would, and will verify that the expected Vehicle Enable message is present.
4. Turn the THEFT Indicator off.
