Instrument Panel - Replacement







REMOVAL

NOTE: Removal and installation of the instrument panel is best accomplished by two people.

1. Disconnect battery ground cable and then disconnect positive battery cable.
2. Disconnect all underhood wiring connectors from main wiring. Disengage rubber grommet seal from dash panel and push main wiring and connectors into passenger compartment.
3. Remove two screws retaining instrument panel steering column cover and two screws retaining instrument panel reinforcement. Remove instrument panel steering column cover.
4. Remove instrument panel reinforcement by removing two bolts.
5. Remove console panel.






6. Install lock cylinder and lock steering column.
7. Remove two screws and remove multi-function switch.
8. Remove four nuts retaining steering column to lower instrument panel support. Lower steering column to floor. Remove pinch bolt and remove multi-function switch.






9. Remove ignition switch lock cylinder, and tilt column lever.









10. Remove four screws retaining upper and lower steering column shrouds and steering column switches and disconnect wiring from ignition switch and shift lock actuator.
11. Remove RH and LH side cowl side trim panel.
12. Remove screw retaining hood latch control handle and cable and move out of the way.
13. Disconnect wiring at RH and LH cowl sides.
14. Remove instrument panel cowl side retaining bolts and nut (two screws on RH side, one screw and one nut on LH side).
15. Remove instrument panel defroster grille.
16. Remove three cowl top screw attachments.
17. Open glove compartment fully and disconnect antenna lead cable and A/C or heater blower motor wiring connector.
18. Pull floor carpet away from front floor pan and disconnect diagnostic monitor.
19. Remove front door opening weatherstrip from door openings.
20. Remove four screws retaining instrument panel to floor bracket.
21. Disconnect pull cable from A/C housing.
22. Disconnect A/C vacuum harness connector.
23. Remove instrument panel.
24. If instrument panel is being replaced, transfer all components, wiring and hardware to new instrument panel.

INSTALLATION

NOTE: Removal and installation of the instrument panel is best accomplished by two people.






1. Position instrument panel in vehicle.
2. Connect A/C vacuum harness connector.
3. Connect control cable to A/C evaporator housing.
4. Install four screws retaining instrument panel to floor bracket. Tighten to 8-10 Nm (71-89 lb in).
5. Install front door opening weatherstrips to door openings.
6. Connect diagnostic monitor electrical connector. Install floor carpet.
7. Working through glove box opening, connect radio antenna lead cable and or heater electrical connectors.
8. Install three screws retaining instrument panel to cowl. Tighten to 8-10 N.m (71-89 lb-in).






9. Install instrument panel upper finish panel.
10. Install two screws retaining instrument panel to the RH cowl side. Tighten to 8-10 N.m (71-89 lb-in).
11. Install one screw and one nut retaining instrument panel to the LH cowl side Tighten screw to 8-10 N.m (71-89 lb-in). Tighten nut to 40-56 N.m (30-41 lb-ft).
12, Connect electrical connectors at RH and LH cowl sides.
13. Install screw retaining bracket for hood latch control handle and cable. Tighten to 16-27 N.m (12-19 lb-ft).
14. Instal RH and LH cowl side trim panels.
15. Place steering column through dash panel aligning steering shaft tube boot with studs.






16. Under instrument panel, install ignition shifter interlock cable and tighten retaining screws to 1.5-2.0 N.m (12-13 lb-in) (automatic transmission only). Align the four studs on steering column with the mounting holes on the steering column collar. Install nuts and tighten to 13-17 N.m (22-30 lb-ft).






17. Connect the ignition switch and key warning buzzer connector wire. Tighten electrical connector screw for ignition switch to 1.6-2.2 N.m(15-19 lb-in).
18. Install multi-function switch.
19. Engage steering column gear input shaft coupling and steering column. Install bolt and tighten to 40-55 N.m (3-40 lb-ft).
20. Install the two nuts retaining steering column tube to the dash panel. Tighten to 8-10 N.m (67-92 lb-in).
21. Install electrical connectors for multi-function switch.






22. Install upper and lower steering column shrouds with tour screws.
23. Install ignition switch lock cylinder.
24. Install console panel.
25. Install instrument panel reinforcement. Tighten retaining screws to 8-10 N.m (71-89 lb-in).
26. Install instrument panel steering column cover. Tighten retaining screws to 8-10 N.m (71-89 lb-in).






27. Push main wiring and connectors through dash panel and into engine compartment.
28. Engage grommet of main wiring to dash panel. Connect connectors.
29. Connect battery cables.
30. Install or restore any other items as necessary.
31. Check all gauges and instrument panel controls for proper operation.
