Recall - Hood Separation Inspection/Repair: Overview

Bulletin:
97S88

November, 1997

Subject:
Safety Recall 97S88 - 1995-96 Windstar & 1994-96 Mustang Hood Separation

AFFECTED VEHICLES
All 1995-96 Windstar and 1994-96 Mustang vehicles with SMC (Sheet Molded Compound) hoods built prior to 12/31/95.

To: All Ford and Lincoln/Mercury Dealers

REASONS FOR RECALL
Certain low speed accidents which do not result in visible damage to the outer hood may cause damage to the adhesive bond between the inner and outer hood panels. Driving at highway speed after such an impact may result in an open gap at the leading edge of the hood. The air forced between the inner and outer panels at this gap can produce enough pressure that in some cases may result in total separation between the inner and outer hood panels.

SERVICE ACTION
The leading edge of the hoods panels on the affected vehicles will be inspected for damage to the bond. If the bond is not separated, the bond area between the hood panels will be cleaned and a reinforcing adhesive applied to the bond area. If any part of the bond is separated, the hood may (See Attachment II "Prior Approval" instruction) be replaced with a new hood assembly.
