Quick Test

OVERVIEW
When performing powertrain diagnostics on OBD II vehicles, the system may be checked by an off board tester referred to as a scan tool. Testing and Inspection contains instructions for performing diagnostics with the New Generation Star (NGS) scan tool and the generic scan tool.

- A generic scan tool has a capability that is standard across the automotive industry in the United States. However, to perform manufacturer specific functions, a string of characters must be entered manually.

- If a New Generation Star is used, those functions are selected from a menu.

DESCRIPTION
Quick Test is divided into three specialized tests, Key On Engine Off (KOEO) Self-Test, Key On Engine Running (KOER) Self-Test and Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Access.

Quick Test checks the integrity and function of the EEC-V powertrain control system and outputs the test results upon demand. Quick Test also provides a quick end check of the powertrain control system and is usually performed at the start of each diagnostic procedure. It is also performed at the end of most pinpoint tests for verification of repair and to make sure no other faults were incurred while servicing a previous fault.

A system pass occurs when Quick Test is performed and DTCs are not output and a scan tool communication problem does not exist. System pass means that inputs and outputs that are monitored by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) are functioning within normal operating limits. When retrieving Continuous Memory DTCs that are emission related (light the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)) and DTCs are not output, then only the emission system has passed. It is possible that a fault still exists in other PCM inputs and outputs.

NOTE: New for EEC-V, retrieving Continuous Memory DTCs must be performed separately from KOEO Quick Test.

PROCEDURES
Quick Test is performed by retrieving KOEO, KOER, and Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Codes. However, under certain fault conditions, the vehicle may not be able to complete or initiate a part or all of Quick Test. The technician should refer to Diagnostic Routines Index.

If any problems occur during Quick Test, the appropriate action or direction is provided. For vehicles with no symptoms, refer to the "No Symptoms Present - EEC-V Quick Test" flow chart. When a pinpoint test directs the technician to perform Quick Test, refer to Clearing and Extracting Codes / Diagnostic Subroutines / Step DSR1 - Vehicle Preparation.

SPECIAL NOTE
Before running Quick Test, always perform the necessary visual checks and safety precautions.
