Disassembly and Assembly









For Ignition Lock Cylinder service and repair, refer to Ignition Switch.

DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove steering column from vehicle.

Steering Column Components:





2. Remove steering column lower yoke, steering column upper bearing spring, suspension height sensor control ring and steering column upper bearing tolerance ring.
3. Remove turn indicator cancel cam, pushing up with flat-bladed screwdriver. Note direction of flush surface.
4. Remove ignition switch, then the steering column bearing retainer and spring.
5. Remove steel steering column upper bearing tolerance ring and steering column tube bearing sleeve, then the plastic steering column upper bearing retainer from ignition switch bore.
6. Remove metal steering column lock housing bearing from ignition switch bore, then the steering column lock gear.
7. Remove two pivot bolts, then the lock cylinder housing.

CAUTION: Steering column position spring will release when bolts are removed.

8. Remove steering gear input worm gear and rack from steering column tube assembly
9. Remove steering column lock lever actuator and steering actuator housing.
10. Remove lower steering column tube bearing and steering column lower bearing retainer.
11. Use drift to remove tilt position lever , then remove steering column lock left hand lever and steering column locking lever springs.

ASSEMBLY
1. Install steering gear input worm gear and rack into steering actuator housing.
2. Install lower steering column tube bearing and steering column instrument panel clamp.
3. Install suspension height sensor control ring, steering column upper bearing tolerance ring, steering column upper bearing spring and steering column lower yoke to steering gear input worm gear and rack.
4. Position steering column lock lever actuator, steering actuator housing in lock cylinder housing, then spray actuators with multi-purpose grease D7AZ-19584-AA or equivalent.
5. Position actuator cam in lock cylinder housing and install cam pivot pin with small hammer. Tap pin in until flush with lock cylinder housing.
6. Install one steering column locking lever spring and righthand steering column locking lever with steering column lock actuator lever pin.
7. Tap steering column lock actuator lever pin into place while driving out drift.
8. Support steering actuator housing in vise and drive steering column lock actuator lever pin flush with steering actuator housing.
9. Place two nuts or spacers to hold steering column lock lefthand lever/righthand steering column locking lever away from steering actuator housing.
10. Lube pivot bolts with multi-purpose grease DOAZ-19584-AA or equivalent, then position steering column position spring on lock cylinder housing and install lock cylinder housing and pivot bolts.
11. Install steel steering column upper bearing tolerance ring and steering column tube bearing sleeve over steering column.
12. Install steering column upper bearing spring and new steering column upper bearing retainer on top side of steering column upper bearing spring using 3/4 inch by 2/3 inch PVC pipe.
13. Install turn indicator cancel cam, flush surface facing up.
14. Install ignition switch, then align pin from ignition switch with slot in lock/column assembly and position slot in lock/column assembly with index mark on casting.
15. Install steering column lock gear, then coat lock gear with multi-purpose grease DOAZ-19584-AA, or equivalent.
16. Install metal steering column lock housing bearing, then coat lock gear with multi-purpose grease DOAZ-19584-AA, or equivalent.
17. Install steering column upper bearing retainer.
18. Install steering column into vehicle.
