Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Service Procedure

1. Check to be sure all engine mount bolts are torqued to specification. Check torque on the bracket bolts and the bolts that go through the rubber bushing.

NOTE:
MAKE SURE THE BOLTS ARE NOT SEIZED. A SEIZED BOLT MAY APPEAR TO BE PROPERLY TORQUED.

2. Check the alignment of the engine mounts. Refer to Figures 1 and 2.

3. If the # 1 engine mount is not aligned correctly, proceed with the following Steps.

4. Using the Three Bar Engine Support (014-00750) or equivalent, suspend the engine and transaxle assembly.

5. Remove the battery, ignition coil, air cleaner, and air cleaner ducts.

6. Loosen the bolts that go through the rubber bushing in the following order; # 3, # 4, # 1 and # 2. Refer to Figure 1.

7. Loosen the two (2) 14 mm nuts on the # 5 engine mount where it connects to the engine mounting member. Refer to Figure 1.

8. Loosen the nuts that hold the # 4 engine mount bracket on the transaxle case. Refer to Figure 1.

9. Center the elongated holes of the # 4 engine mount bracket on the transaxle studs and tighten the nuts.

10. Carefully reposition the engine and transaxle to center the engine and transaxle.

11. Torque the bolts that go through the rubber bushing to specification in the following order; # 3, # 4, # 1 and # 2.

12. Torque the two (2) 14 mm nuts on the # 5 engine mount to specification.

13. Recheck the clearance between the # 1 engine mount and bracket from the top of the vehicle. Refer to Figure 2.

14. Check to be sure # 1 engine mount is centered in bracket. Refer to Figure 3.

a. If # 1 engine mount is centered, go to Step 20.

b. If # 1 engine mount is not centered, go to Step 15.

15. Remove the two (2) 10mm nuts securing a wiring harness to the bulkhead (located above the # 1 engine mount).

16. Loosen the two (2) 17 mm nuts and one (1) 17 mm bolt that attach the # 1 engine mount to the engine mounting member. Refer to Figure 3.

17. Using a suitable pry bar, reposition the # 1 engine mount so that there is equal distance from each side of the bracket to the # 1 engine mount. Refer to Figure 3.

18. While holding the # 1 mount in place, torque the two (2) 17 mm nuts and one (1) 17 mm bolt to 67-93 N.m (50-68 lb-ft).

19. Secure the wiring harness to the bulkhead.

20. Install the battery, ignition coil, air cleaner and air cleaner ducts.

21. Verify the repair.

NOTE:
ALL NUTS AND BOLTS SHOULD BE TIGHTENED TO SPECIFICATION. REFER TO THE APPROPRIATE YEAR PROBE SERVICE MANUAL, SECTION 03-01A, FOR TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
