Fuel Injector: Description and Operation

Fuel Injector:

The fuel injectors are electro-mechanical devices which supply metered and atomized fuel to the engine. The amount of fuel supplied to the engine is controlled by how long the injection solenoid is energized (pulse width).

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) controls the pulse width according to the inputs received from the various engine sensors and switches. When the injectors are energized, the needle valve is pulled off its seat. Fuel is then injected into the intake manifold.

To reduce carbon buildup on the tip of the fuel injector, the tip is fitted with a four-orifice discharge plate. To improve fuel economy and throttle response, the atomized fuel mist is sprayed in two directions, into each intake port.
