This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to include a warm-up catalyst inspection procedure.
CALIBRATION:
6KFSDM0, 6KFSDM1, 6KFSDM2, 6KFSDA0, 6KFSDA1, 6kFSDA2, 6KFSDA3, 6KFSDA4, 62FSDM0, 62FSDM1, 62FSDM2, 62FSDA0, 62FSDA1, 62FSDA2, 62FSDA3, 62FSDA4
WARNING:
THIS MODIFICATION IS AUTHORIZED ONLY FOR THE LISTED ENGINE. PERFORMING THIS MODIFICATION ON OTHER ENGINE CALIBRATIONS IS UNAUTHORIZED AND COULD CREATE LIABILITY UNDER APPLICABLE FEDERAL OR LOCAL LAWS.
ISSUE:
The "Check Engine" Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may illuminate and Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0421 may be stored in memory. There may be no driveability concerns present.
ACTION:
Reprogram the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) with Service Bay Diagnostic System (SBDS) or New Generation Star (NGS) Tester. The revised calibration should resolve this concern. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
NOTE:
REGIONAL APPROVAL MUST BE OBTAINED WHEN IT IS NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE PCM.
Perform an EEC Diagnostic Quick Test to check for DTCs in memory:
1. For all DTCs present, complete normal diagnostics and repair as required. Refer to the 1996 Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) On-Board Diagnostics II (OBD II) Service Manual for detailed diagnostics and repair procedure.
2. For DTC P0421, complete Pinpoint Test HF1-HF5 on Page 6A-276 in the 1996 PC/ED Service Manual and repair as required.
3. Perform catalyst inspection procedure:
a. Connect an NGS Tester to the vehicle and start the engine.
b. Select "Vehicle & Engine" and press trigger.
c. Select "New Vehicle Year and Model" and press trigger.
d. Select "1996 VIN # 10:T" and press trigger.
e. Select "1996 Probe 2.0L" and press trigger.
f. Confirm the correct model is displayed and press trigger.
g. Select "Diagnostic Data Link" and press trigger.
h. Select "Powertrain Control Module (PCM)" and press trigger.
i. Select "PID/Data Monitor and Record" and press trigger.
j. Select "02S11" and press trigger.
k. Select "02S12" and press trigger.
l. Drive the vehicle at 64-97 km/h (40-60 mph) for 10 minutes.
m. Stop the vehicle and allow engine to idle in Park or Neutral.
NOTE:
THE FOLLOWING STEPS NEED TO BE PERFORMED WITHIN 3 MINUTES OF DRIVE CYCLE.
n. Press "Start" (key 7).
o. Wait 20-30 seconds and press trigger.
p. Wait 10 more seconds and press trigger.
q. Select "View Recording" and press trigger.
r. Select "O2S11" and press trigger.
s. Select "02S12" and press trigger.
t. Press "Graph" (Key 6).
u. Press key 9 to show "O2S11" alone.
v. Press Key 8 to forward or Key 3 to reverse and select minus (-) to (+) screen located at the bottom of the graph (i.e., -56.5 T 0.0 +12.5).
w. Turn scroll dial until cursor is at "T 0.0."
x. Count and record the number of inversion cycles to the left of "T 0.0" (O2S11). Refer to Figure 1.
y. Press Key 2 to show O2S12 alone.
z. Turn scroll dial until cursor is at "T 0.0."
aa. Count and record the number of inversion cycles to the left of "T 0.0" (O2S12). Refer to Figure 1.
bb. Divide 02511 inversion cycles by the number of O2S12 inversion cycles.
cc. If the ratio of inversion cycles is less than 2.0, replace the Warm-up Catalyst (F62Z-5G232-A). Refer to Section 09-00 of the 1997 Probe Service Manual for replacement procedure.
dd. If the ratio is greater than 2.0, continue to the next Step.
4. Reprogram the PCM with appropriate calibration using the latest CD-ROM.
Obtain an Authorized Modification Decal (FPS 8262 - obtainable through DOES II, 25/pkg) and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
