Removal and Replacement

REMOVAL

Transaxle Replacement:

NOTE: Refer to the Transaxle Replacement image when replacing transaxle.

1. Disconnect battery cables, then remove battery hold-down, battery and tray from vehicle.
2. Remove air cleaner assembly, then disconnect Manual Lever Position (MLP) sensor electrical connector.
3. Remove two MLP sensor bolts and sensor, then the two ground wire bracket bolts.
4. Separate shift cable from bracket, then remove bracket.

Transaxle Electrical Connector And Retaining Ring:

5. Disconnect transaxle electrical connector by pushing on retaining ring and pulling up on connector, then disconnect and plug oil cooler outlet and inlet hoses.
6. Remove two upper starter motor bolts, then support engine with Rotunda Three Bar Engine Support tool No. 014-00750 or equivalent.
7. Remove top three transaxle to engine bolts, two fuel filter bracket nuts, and two ignition coil nuts. Position coil aside.
8. Remove three speed control servo nuts and position servo aside, then remove three ignition coil mounting strap bolts.
9. Disconnect wiring harness clips from ignition coil mounting straps, then remove straps.
10. Remove two nuts, two bolts, and through bolt from lefthand transaxle support insulator, then remove insulator.
11. Raise and support vehicle, then remove front wheels and fender splash shields.
12. Remove six crossmember bolts and crossmember.
13. Remove six rear engine support nuts and two bolts, then the rear engine support.
14. Remove front wheel driveshaft and joints, then install transaxle plug set tool No. T88C-7025-AH or equivalent into differential side gear.
15. Remove intake manifold support bolts, then the support.
16. Disconnect S and B-terminal wires from starter motor, then remove lower starter motor bolt and motor.
17. Disconnect Transmission Speed Sensor (TSS) connector, then remove four torque converter to flywheel nuts through starter pocket.
18. Remove front transaxle support insulator through bolt, then the insulator.
19. Remove four front transaxle support bracket bolts and bracket, then the two remaining transaxle to engine bolts.
20. Remove rear transaxle support insulator through bolt, then the three engine to transaxle bolts.
21. Lower vehicle, then lower transaxle by loosening engine support bolt.
22. Raise and support vehicle, then separate transaxle from engine block and partially lower transaxle from engine.
23. Disconnect Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS), then lower transaxle from vehicle.

INSTALLATION

Transaxle To Engine Bolts:

1. Raise transaxle and install on engine block, then align torque converter studs to flywheel and install transaxle to engine bolts. Tighten bolts (B) and (C) as shown in the Transaxle To Engine Bolts image.
2. Install, but do not tighten, rear transaxle support insulator through bolt, then install front transaxle support bracket and bolts.
3. Install front transaxle support insulator and through bolt, but do not tighten bolt.
4. Connect TSS and VSS connectors, then install four torque converter to flywheel nuts and tighten.
5. Install torque converter access plug, then lower vehicle.
6. Install lefthand transaxle support insulator and through bolt.
7. Install, but do not tighten, two lefthand transaxle support insulator nuts and bolts, then remove engine support.

Rear Engine Support Nuts And Bolts:

8. Raise and support vehicle, then install rear engine support. Tighten bolts (A), (B) and (C) to specifications as shown in the Rear Engine Support Nuts And Bolts image.
9. Tighten front and rear transaxle support insulator through bolts, then position starter motor and install lower bolt and tighten bolts.
10. Connect S and B-terminal wires to starter motor, then install intake manifold support and bolts. Tighten B-terminal wire nut and manifold support bolts.
11. Remove transaxle plugs, then install front wheel driveshaft, joints, and crossmember. Tighten six crossmember bolts.
12. Install front fender splash shields and front wheels, then lower vehicle. Tighten wheel lug nuts.
13. Tighten two lefthand transaxle support insulator nuts and bolts, then install ignition coil mounting straps.
14. Connect wiring harness clips to ignition coil mounting straps, then install speed control servo and ignition coil. Tighten ignition coil nuts.
15. Install fuel filter bracket nuts and two upper starter motor bolts and tighten.
16. Install remaining transaxle to engine bolts, then tighten transaxle to engine bolts (A) as shown in the Transaxle To Engine Bolts image.
17. Install shift cable bracket and bolt C then connect transaxle electrical connector.
18. Install and connect MLP sensor, the tighten sensor bolts to specification and connect oil cooler outlet and inlet hoses.
19. Install air cleaner assembly, batter tray, battery, and hold-down. Tighten battery tray bolts.
20. Connect battery cables, then fill transaxle with suitable ATF and check for leaks. Recheck fluid level and inspect for leaks with engine at normal operating temperature.
21. Road test vehicle to check shift points and shift quality.
