Catalytic Converter: Description and Operation
Three-Way Catalytic Converter:
PURPOSE
- The catalytic converter is mounted in the engine exhaust stream and plays an important role in the emission control system. The converter works as a gas reactor by speeding up the heat producing chemical reaction in order to reduce the air pollutants in the engine exhaust.
- The Three-Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) is not only effective for catalyzing the oxidation reactions of Hydrocarbons (HC) and Carbon Monoxide (CO), but it also catalyzes the reduction of Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx).
CONSTRUCTION
- Three way Catalytic Converters in single-catalyst systems use a catalyst of monolithic construction in a clamshell container.
- The catalytic agent used in the TWC is an alloy of platinum and rhodium and/or palladium and rhodium. The use of unleaded fuel is required.
