Removal and Installation






CAUTION: Do not remove steering wheel and driver side air bag module as an assembly unless the column is locked or the steering column gear input shaft coupling is secured to keep it from turning. This will avoid damage to the air bag sliding contact assembly.

1. Ensure wheels are in straight ahead position.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Remove steering wheel.
4. Remove bolt retaining steering column intermediate shaft coupling to steering column lower yoke.
5. Remove lower instrument panel steering column cover.
6. Insert suitable scratch awl into access hole located in bottom of lower steering column shroud. Push in on ignition lock cylinder release pin, rotate ignition switch lock cylinder clockwise to RUN position, then remove lock cylinder from column.
7. Remove upper and lower steering column shroud.
8. On models with column shift, unsnap and slide shift control selector lever boot toward end of control lever. Remove control lever by removing retaining pin.
9. On models with overdrive lockout switch on column lever, disconnect wiring connector at bottom of steering column and remove wiring from column with control lever.
10. Disconnect wiring connectors for ignition switch, horn, speed control, interlock switch, and air bag.
11. Remove screws retaining multi-function switch and position switch aside.
12. Remove shift indicator cable from shifter tube.
13. Remove screw securing shifter indicator retainer from column adjustment cable.
14. Remove nuts securing steering column to instrument panel support bracket and carefully lower steering column.

Interlock Cable Actuator:





15. On models with console shift, remove interlock cable and actuator.
16. Remove steering column from vehicle.
17. Reverse procedure to install. Adjust shift indicator cable as necessary.
