Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview

1. Verify the customer original concern by operating the windshield wiper and washer system to duplicate the condition.
2. Inspect to determine if one of the following mechanical or electrical concerns apply:






3. Visually inspect the components of the rear windshield wiper system.






4. If inspection reveals an obvious concern that is readily serviced, correct the concern before continuing with Inspection and Verification.
5. If a concern remains after the inspection, use the Rotunda New Generation Star Tester 007-00500 or equivalent, to retrieve diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and to execute wiper self test diagnostics for the generic electronic module (GEM).
6. To perform wiper self-test:
A. Select GEM-GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE.
B. Press TRIGGER to enter this menu. At POWER DOOR LOCKS?, select the answer applicable to the vehicle being tested by pressing TRIGGER to toggle between YES and NO.
C. Press SAVE to enter selection. Select DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODES. Press TRIGGER to enter this menu.
D. Select WIPER SELF TEST. Press TRIGGER to initiate test.
E Press START and follow the instructions on the NGS Tester screen. Inspection and Verification
7. If wiper self-test is passed and no diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are retrieved, GO to the Symptom Chart to continue diagnostics.
8. If diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are retrieved, GO to the DTC Reference Chart to continue diagnostics.
9. If the generic electronic module (GEM) can not be accessed by the new generation star tester (NGS) tester, go to Pinpoint Test A.
