Assembly
Assembly of Steering Column
1. Install steering column shaft assembly into steering actuator housing.
2. Install lower steering column bearing and column mounting bracket. Tighten screws to 7-11 Nm (62-97 inch lbs.).
3. Install suspension height sensor control ring steering column bearing tolerance ring, steering column upper bearing spring and steering column lower yoke to steering column shaft assembly. Tighten pinch bolt to 25-35 Nm (19-25 ft. lbs.).
4. Position actuator cam in steering column lock cylinder housing and install cam pivot pin with small hammer. Tap pin in until flush with steering column lock cylinder housing.
5. Install one steering column locking lever spring and steering column locking lever (RH) into steering actuator housing using a drift to hold in place.
6. Install the other steering column locking lever spring and steering column lock left hand lever with pivot pin. Tap pin into place while driving out drift.
7. Support steering actuator housing in a vise and drive pin flush with steering actuator housing.
8. Place two nuts or spacers to hold steering column lock left hand lever and steering column locking lever (RH) away from steering actuator housing.
9. Install steering column shaft assembly into steering column lock cylinder housing.
10. Position steering column lock lever actuator, steering actuator housing in steering column lock cylinder housing. Spray upper steering column lock lever actuator and lower steering column lock lever actuator with Ignition Lock Grease FOAZ-19584-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESA-M1C232-A.
11. Position steering column position spring on steering column lock cylinder housing. With assistant, install steering column lock cylinder housing and pivot bolts. Tighten to 18-26 Nm (14-19 ft. lbs.).
12. Install steel steering column bearing tolerance ring and steering column bearing sleeve over steering column shaft assembly.
NOTE: Lube pivot bolts with Multi-Purpose Grease DOAZ-19584-AA, Multi-Purpose Grease Spray F5AZ-19G209-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specifications ESB-M1C93-B or ESR-M1C159-A before installing.
13. Install steering column upper bearing spring and new bearing retainer on top side of steering column upper bearing spring using A19.05 x 60.32 mm (3/4 inch by 2-3/8 inch) PVC pipe.
NOTE: Do not use hammer on pipe to seat bearing retainer on steering column bearing. Damage to upper steering column lock cylinder housing may occur.
14. Install turn indicator cancel cam, flush surface up.
15. Install ignition switch. Align pin from ignition switch with slot in lock/column assembly. Position slot in lock/column assembly with index mark on casting. Tighten two retaining screws to 5-7 Nm (45-61 inch lbs.).
16. Install steering column lock gear. Coat steering column lock gear with Ignition Lock Grease FOAZ-19584-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESA-M1C232-A.
17. Install metal steering column lock housing bearing. Lubricate with Multi-Purpose Grease DOAZ-19584-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESB-M 1 C93-B.
18. Install plastic bearing retainer with tangs down.
19. Install shift control selector bracket.
20. Install shift lock actuator.
21. Install steering column in vehicle.
22. Install air bag sliding contact.
23. Install steering wheel.
24. Connect battery ground cable.
25. Verify air bag warning indicator.
