Engine - Front Cover/Water Pump Stud Oil Leak

ENGINE - 3.8L - OIL LEAK AT # 4 FRONT COVER/WATER PUMP STUD - VEHICLES BUILT THROUGH 1/10/96

FORD:
1996 MUSTANG, THUNDERBIRD

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1996 COUGAR

ISSUE:
Engine oil may leak from the # 4 front cover/water pump stud onto the ignition coil pack bracket area. This is caused by the lack of sealant on the water pump stud threads.

ACTION:
Remove the water pump stud from the engine block and reseal. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE








1. Inspect for oil migration and/or leak at the # 4 front cover/water pump stud area (Figures 1 and 2).

2. Remove the ignition coil bracket by removing the two (2) bracket nuts and one (1) bolt, remove bracket and place out of the way (Figure 2).

NOTE:
THE 8 mm STUD REMOVER IS NOT A ROTUNDA TOOL.

CAUTION:
DO NOT USE AN IMPACT WRENCH WITH THE STUD REMOVER OR THE DOUBLE NUT METHOD.

3. Remove the stud. Use either a double nut or a non-slip 8 mm stud remover socket.

4. Clean out the threads in the block and reinstall original Stud if not damaged (N804853-S36, if needed).

5. Apply Pipe Thread Sealant with Teflon (D8AZ-19554-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSK-M2G350-A2) to the stud and reinstall in block. Torque stud to 8-12 N.m (71-106 lb-in).

6. Install the ignition coil bracket. Tighten the bolt and nuts to 20-30 N.m (15-22 lb-ft).
