ISSUE:
Windnoise emanating from the moonroof may occur on some vehicles. This may be due to a gap in the moon roof seal "butt joint" located on the passenger side of the moonroof. The gap is caused by shrinkage of the seal due to exposure to sunlight and weather.
ACTION:
Replace the moonroof seal with the new design seal and add a stainless steel "staple" to the moonroof seal "butt joint." The new seal material is resistant to shrinkage, and the staple will reinforce the joint and prevent separation. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Moonroof Glass Panel Removal
1. Place the moonroof into the fully CLOSED position. Removal of the moonroof glass panel from the CLOSED position makes reinstallation and adjustment of the glass panel much easier.
2. Remove the three (3) screws that secure the trim ring to the glass panel.
3. Slide the trim ring back into the headliner along with the sliding sun shade.
4. Remove the six (6) Phillips head screws (3 per side) that secure the glass panel to the lifter arm assemblies.
5. Carefully lift the glass from the vehicle.
NOTE:
ASSISTANCE FROM A SECOND TECHNICIAN TO REMOVE THE GLASS PANEL IS RECOMMENDED TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE AND/OR GLASS PANEL.
Old Seal Removal
1. Pull old seal from the glass panel.
2. Remove the old seal adhesive from the glass panel frame. The old adhesive can be removed by using a plastic scraper and isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol).
NOTE:
DO NOT USE A METAL SCRAPER WHEN REMOVING THE OLD ADHESIVE. THE SEALING SURFACE MUST BE FREE FROM THE OLD ADHESIVE AND SCRATCHES.
New Seal Installation
1. The new Seal (F7VZ-5451884-AA) must be trimmed to the proper length prior to installation. Trim one end of the new seal square.
2. Temporarily install the seal onto the glass panel. Locate the butt joint of the seal on the passenger side of the glass panel.
NOTE:
DO NOT STRETCH THE SEAL WHEN INSTALLING.
3. Trim the other end of the seal to allow a 6 mm (0.25 inch) overlap at the butt joint.
4. Remove the seal from the glass panel.
5. Clean the sealing surface of the glass panel with isopropyl alcohol.
6. Apply a bead of Ford Instant Adhesive (E8AZ-19554-A), or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSK-M2G403-A4, to the entire length of the seal in the area indicated in Figure 1.
7. Install the seal onto the glass panel, except for the last 100 mm to 150 mm (4 to 6 inches) of the seal. The seal butt joint is to be located on the passenger side of the glass panel.
8. Insert metal staple halfway into the end of the seal. Carefully install the remaining part of the seal onto the glass panel. Make sure that the staple is centered in the butt joint (Figure 2).
9. With the staple centered in the butt joint, set the staple by placing a block of wood over butt joint and strike it sharply with a hammer. The staple will push through the plastic seal carrier and the prongs will bend over and grip the seal.
10. Allow the adhesive to cure prior to installation of the glass panel. This requires a minimum of one hour.
Moonroof Glass Panel Installation
1. Place glass panel into roof opening. Assistance from a second technician is recommended.
2. Make sure that the glass panel is centered and flush to the roof panel.
3. Install the six (6) Phillips head screws that secure the glass panel to the lifting arms. Tighten the screws to 0.8-1.5 N.m (7-13 lb-in).
4. Cycle the moonroof from CLOSED to VENT and verify that the glass panel is flush to the roof panel. Adjust as required to get a proper fit.
5. Reinstall the glass panel trim ring.
