LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1996 COUGAR
ISSUE:
The door glass may make a popping noise at the full up position or the glass may not go to the full up position, resulting in windnoise and/or water leaks. This usually occurs at highway speeds with the blower motor on high. This may be caused by the glass run channel not lining up with the glass at the A-pillar.
ACTION:
Bend the glass run mounting flange on door outward in the area where the glass and the glass run do not align properly. Bending the flange should align the glass and the run, reducing the possibility of the glass not going to the full up position. Refer to the following Service procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Remove the door glass as outlined in the 1996 Thunderbird/Cougar Service Manual.
2. Using a flange bender or wide-bladed channel locks, bend the door glass run flange outward along the A-pillar in the area of concern (typically 51 mm/2" rearward of the A-pillar corner extending for 305 mm/12" rearward) (Figure 1).
3. Gradually bend the flange a little at a time all along the 305 mm (12") until the flange has been bent approximately 6 mm (0.25") at the center (Figure 1). The flange must smoothly meet with the rest of the flange at the ends of the length worked.
4. Reinstall the door glass run and the door glass as outlined in the 1996 Thunderbird/Cougar Service Manual.
5. Verify the repair.
