Removal and Installation


Steering Gear - 4.6L Engine

Removal
1. Raise the vehicle. Vehicle Lifting
2. Remove the front wheel/tire assemblies.
3. Remove the cotter pins from the left and right outer tie-rod ends. Remove the castle nuts from each of the tie-rods.
5. Separate the tie-rod ends from the left and right front wheel knuckles, using Tie-Rod End Remover TOO L-3290-D, or equivalent.
5. Remove the engine splash shield by disconnecting six pushpin retainers.
6. Position a drain pan.
7. Remove the engine oil filter to gain access to the power steering gear fittings.
8. Remove the power steering pressure hose bracket retaining bolt at the subframe. Disconnect and plug the pressure hose at the steering gear.
9. Disconnect and plug the power steering return hose at the hose clamp near the steering gear.
10. Drain the power steering fluid.
11. Remove the drain pan.
12. Remove the steering shaft retaining bolt at the bottom side of the flex coupling and separate the shaft from the steering gear.
13. Remove the steering rack-to-subframe bolts and nuts. Remove the power steering gear from the vehicle.
14. Remove the return line fitting and 0-Ring from the steering gear (if required).

Installation






1. Install a new Teflon 0-ring to the fitting and install the return line to the steering gear. Tighten the fitting 37 N.m (27 lb-ft).
2. Position the steering gear. Install the retaining bolts and nuts. Tighten the bolts to 165 N.m (122 lb-ft).
3. Install a new Teflon 0-ring on the power steering pressure line fitting. Install the line to the steering gear lighten the fitting to 37 N.m (27 lb-ft).
4 Install the pressure hose bracket and retaining bolt. Tighten the bolt to 10 N.m (89 lb-in)
5. Connect the power steering return hose to the steering gear fitting. Position the clamp in place.
6. Position the steering shaft to the steering gear and install the retaining bolt. Tighten the bolt to 49 N.m (36 lb-ft).
7. Clean the 0-ring surface on the engine and the oil filter. Lubricate the oil filter 0-ring and install the filter.
8. Position the engine splash shield and install the six pushpin retainers.
9. Install the outer tie-rod ends to both front wheel knuckles and install the castle nuts to the tie-rod ends. Tighten the nuts to 63 N.m (46 lb-ft). Install new cotter pins.
10. Install the front wheel/tire assemblies.
11. Lower the vehicle.
12. Partially fill the engine with oil.
13. Fill and leak check the power steering system.
14. Check the toe setting and adjust it if necessary. Alignment
