This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to include Service Part numbers for Powertrain Control Modules (PCMs).
CALIBRATION:
6-18B-R10, 6-18P-R10
WARNING:
THIS MODIFICATION IS AUTHORIZED ONLY FOR THE LISTED ENGINE. PERFORMING THIS MODIFICATION ON OTHER ENGINE CALIBRATIONS IS UNAUTHORIZED AND COULD CREATE LIABILITY UNDER APPLICABLE FEDERAL OR LOCAL LAWS.
ISSUE:
There may be delayed engagements from "Park" to "Reverse" or "Park" to "Overdrive" and/or delayed 1-2 shifts or rough 3-4 shifts. This may be due to the calibration of the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
ACTION:
Reprogram the PCM using the Service Bay Diagnostic System (SBDS) or New Generation Star (NGS) Tester on all affected vehicles. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
NOTE:
REGIONAL APPROVAL MUST BE OBTAINED WHEN IT IS NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE PCM.
NOTE:
ALL VEHICLES WITH AFFECTED CALIBRATIONS SHOULD RECEIVE THE UPDATED SERVICE CALIBRATION.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Check the vehicle for an Authorized Modification Decal to determine if TSB 96-20-4 has already been performed or check the calibration using SBDS or NGS to determine if the latest calibration has been installed. If TSB 96-20-4 has been performed or the latest calibration has been installed, this update has already been incorporated into the PCM and no further Steps in this TSB are necessary. Refer to the 1996 Thunderbird/Cougar Service Manual for additional diagnostics. If TSB 96-20-4 has not been performed and the vehicle does not contain the latest calibration, reprogram the PCM by following the Steps listed below or by following the Steps outlined in TSB 96-20-4.
2. For all customer concerns except MIL On, conduct normal diagnostics and repair as required. Upon completion of repairs, proceed to Step 4. For MIL On concerns, proceed to Step 3.
3. Perform an EEC Diagnostic Quick Test to check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) in memory:
^ For all DTCs present, complete normal diagnostics and repair as required, then go to Step 4. Refer to the 1996 Thunderbird/Cougar Service Manual and the 1996 Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) On-Board Diagnostics II (OBD II) Service Manual for detailed diagnostic and repair procedures.
^ For the concern listed in the Title of this article, complete normal diagnostics and repair as required. If no repairs were indicated, proceed to Step 4. If repairs were required, first proceed to Step 4, then verify the concern was resolved after the PCM has been reprogrammed by rechecking DTCs after completing a test drive of the vehicle using the following drive cycle.
- Allow the vehicle to reach normal operating temperature.
- Accelerate moderately (1/2 to 3/4 throttle) to 97-105 km/h (60-65 mph).
- Cruise at 97-1O5 km/h (60-65 mph) for a minimum of 1 minute (must be on a level road or slight grade) using steady throttle pressure.
- Decelerate in gear (no brake) to 56-64 km/h (35-40 mph).
- Cruise at 56-64 km/h (35-40 mph) for 1 minute (must be on level road) using steady throttle pressure.
- Repeat 4 times.
If any DTCs return, repair as required.
4. Check decal to verify vehicle does not have the latest calibration. If it does not, reprogram the PCM with the appropriate calibration per the Application Chart using the latest level calibration CD-ROM or later.
Obtain an Authorized Modification Decal (FPS 8262 - orderable through DOES II, 25/pkg) and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
