Safety Recall 95S32 - Certain 1996 Thunderbird and Cougar Vehicles For Inspection and, If Necessary, Replacement of Semi-Automatic Temperature Control Module

Affected Vehicles
Certain 1996 Model Year Thunderbird and Cougar vehicles equipped with Semi-Automatic Temperature Control (SATC), and built from August 30, 1995 through December 7, 1995 at the Lorain Assembly Plant.

Reasons For Recall
On some vehicles equipped with the optional Semi-Automatic Temperature Control System (SATC), the control module may malfunction and cause erratic blower operation. The blower may 1) operate continuously at high blower, 2) may not operate regardless of control position or 3) may operate erratically between no blower and high blower. If the blower output is limited or stops, the vehicle's defroster may not clear the windshield of frost or fog.

To correct this condition, dealers are to inspect and, if necessary, replace the semi-automatic temperature control module with a revised design module.

Temporary Automatic Temperature Control Resetting Procedure

If the condition occurs, an owner may reset the semi-automatic temperature control by performing the following procedure. Ford recommends that this procedure not be performed while driving.

1. Turn ignition ON.

2. Place temperature control on AUTO and set mode switch to PANEL.

3. Press the OUTSIDE TEMP and COOL buttons at the same time, then release the buttons and press the WARM button.

4. After the display "dances", press the OUTSIDE TEMP button then press WARM button. Move blower control off AUTO. The blower motor should start to run.

This procedure can be used to temporarily restore function until a replacement module is installed. It may be necessary to repeat the procedure if the condition reoccurs prior to repair.
