Power Steering Line/Hose: Service and Repair

Removal
All Vehicles

NOTE: Whenever the hoses are disconnected from the power steering pump, make sure the accessory drive belt is not contaminated with power steering fluid.

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Raise and support the vehicle.





3. Using the special tool, disconnect the fluid cooler hose.
1. Insert the special tool into the hose quick release coupling.
2. Move the special tool along the hose to release the locking tangs.
- Allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.





4. Detach the hose support clamp.
- Remove the screw.





5. Detach the power steering hoses from the steering gear.
1. Remove the bolt.
2. Rotate the clamp plate.
- Allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.
6. Lower the vehicle.

Vehicles with 2.0L Zetec engine





7. Detach the pressure line support brackets.
- Remove the bolts.
- Detach the speed control cable (if equipped).





8. Disconnect the pressure line union from the power steering pump.
- Allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.

Vehicles with 2.0L SPI engine





9. Detach the pressure line support brackets.





10. Disconnect the pressure line union from the power steering pump.
- Allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.

All Vehicles

11. Remove the pressure line.

Installation
All Vehicles





1. If a new pressure line is to be installed, push the new line into the new union.





2. Using the special tool, install a new Teflon O-ring seal.
1. Push the O-ring seal onto the special tool.
2. Locate the tool over the union and push on the O-ring seal.

3. CAUTION: Make sure the line is routed correctly.

Install the pressure line into position.

Vehicles with 2.0L Zetec engine





4. Connect the pressure line union.





5. Install the pressure line support brackets.
- Install the bolts.
- Attach the speed control cable (if equipped).

Vehicles with 2.0L SPI engine





6. Connect the pressure line union.





7. Install the pressure line support brackets.

All Vehicles

8. Raise and support the vehicle.





9. Install the power steering lines.
1. Rotate the clamp plate.
2. Install the bolt.





10. Install the support clamp.





11. Connect the fluid cooler hose.
12. Lower the vehicle.
13. Connect the battery ground cable.
14. Bleed the power steering system.
