Front Seat Backrest
DISASSEMBLYAll vehicles
1. Remove the head restraint.
2. Remove the head restraint guides.
^ Using a suitable screwdriver, depress the locking tang.
3. Remove the backrest lumbar support adjust lever (if equipped).
3-door
4. Remove the backrest release lever.
All vehicles
5. Detach the backrest cover from the underside of the backrest.
^ Detach the retaining strip.
6. Roll the backrest cover up the backrest to access the lower ends of the tensioning rods.
7. Detach the lower ends of the tensioning rods from the backrest.
8. Roll the backrest cover up the backrest to access the upper ends of the tensioning rods.
9. Detach the upper ends of the tensioning rods from the backrest.
10. Roll the backrest cover up the backrest to access the upper end of the spring frame.
11. Detach the backrest cover from the spring frame.
^ Cut the hog rings.
Vehicles with side air bags
12. Remove the side air bag module deployment sleeve retainer.
^ Remove and discard the plastic retaining rivet
WARNING: DO NOT RE-USE THE PLASTIC RETAINING RIVET. ALWAYS USE THE NEW RIVET FROM THE SERVICE KIT. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THIS WARNING COULD IMPAIR THE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT AND MAY RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.
13. Slide apart the plastic retaining strips securing the side air bag deployment sleeve.
WARNING: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SEPARATE THE PLASTIC RETAINING STRIPS IN ANY OTHER WAY THAN THAT DETAILED. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THIS WARNING COULD IMPAIR THE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT AND MAY RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.
All vehicles
14. Remove the backrest cover.
^ Detach the retaining strip.
15. Remove the tensioning rods from the backrest cover if a new backrest cover is to be used.
16. Remove the backrest pad and heater mat (if equipped).
17. Remove the anti-squeak mat.
CAUTION: Make sure the exact position of the anti-squeak mat on the frame is noted.
Vehicles with side air bags
18. Remove the side air bag module.
ASSEMBLY
All vehicles
1. Use hog ring pliers to close the hog rings. Do not use any other tool. The hog rings must be closed to overlap as illustrated.
Vehicles with side air bags
2. Install the side air bag module.
All vehicles
3. Install the anti-squeak mat.
WARNING: MAKE SURE THE ANTI-SQUEAK MAT IS CORRECTLY PLACED ONTO THE BACKREST FRAME. DO NOT COVER THE SIDE AIR BAG MODULE. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THIS WARNING COULD IMPAIR AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT AND MAY RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.
4. Install the backrest pad.
WARNING: MAKE SURE THE BACKREST PAD IS CORRECTLY PLACED AROUND THE SIDE AIR BAG MODULE. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THIS WARNING COULD IMPAIR AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT AND MAY RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.
5. Install the heater mat (if equipped).
6. Install the tensioning rods into the backrest cover if a new backrest cover is to be installed.
NOTE: If a new backrest pad is being installed a hole must be drilled in the pad to facilitate the wiring harness.
7. Attach the backrest cover to the underside of the top of the seat frame.
^ Attach the retaining strip.
Vehicles with side air bags
8. Attach the plastic retaining strip to secure the side air bag deployment sleeve.
9. Install the side air bag module deployment sleeve retainer.
^ Assemble the plastic rivet into the plastic retaining strip attaching the side air bag module deployment sleeve.
WARNING: DO NOT RE-USE THE PLASTIC RETAINING RIVET. ALWAYS USE THE NEW RIVET FROM THE SERVICE KIT. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THIS WARNING COULD IMPAIR THE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT AND MAY RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.
All vehicles
10. Attach the backrest cover to the spring frame.
^ Install the hog rings.
11. Roll the backrest cover down the backrest to the upper end of the spring frame.
12. Attach the upper ends of the tensioning rods to the backrest.
13. Roll the backrest cover down the backrest to the lower end of the spring frame.
14. Attach the lower ends of the tensioning rods to the backrest.
15. Roll the backrest cover down the backrest.
16. Install the backrest cover.
^ Attach the retaining strip.
3-door
17. Install the backrest release lever.
All vehicles
18. Install the backrest lumbar support adjust lever (if equipped).
19. Install the head restraint guides.
20. Install the head restraint.
