Transaxle





Removal
1. General Notes
- The positions of the engine mountings and engine roll restrictors are described looking from the transaxle towards the engine.
- Operations for particular variants, which do not apply to all vehicles, are marked clearly with a note.
- If necessary, remove the cable ties and install new ones when reinstalling the assembly.

2. CAUTION: Disconnect the battery ground and positive cables.

Remove the battery.





3. Remove the battery tray.
1. Disconnect and separate the connector.
2. Remove the bolts.
3. Unclip the wiring harness.





4. Remove the air cleaner housing.
1. Disconnect the electrical connector at the mass air flow (MAF) sensor.
2. Detach the crankcase ventilation hose.
3. Detach the intake hose.
- Remove the air cleaner housing from the rubber bushes.





5. Disconnect the ground lead.





6. NOTE: Use an Allen key to prevent the piston rod from rotating.

Loosen the lock nuts on both sides five turns.





7. Remove the intake tube.





8. NOTE: The resonator is push fit into the bracket.

Remove the air cleaner intake and resonator.





9. Detach the gearshift gables from the transaxle.
1. Detach the gearshift cable and the selector cable from the selector levers.
2. Turn the abutment sleeves clockwise and detach the cables from the bracket
10. Raise the vehicle.
11. Remove the front wheels.





12. Remove the flexible exhaust pipe.





13. Remove the roll restrictor.





14. CAUTION: Protect the ball joint seal using a soft cloth to prevent damage.

Remove the lower arm ball joint on both sides.





15. CAUTION: Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 18 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 45 degrees.

NOTE: Plug the transaxle to prevent oil loss or dirt ingress.

Loosen the right-hand halfshaft and the intermediate shaft.
- Remove the intermediate shaft bearing cap.
- Discard the nuts and the bearing cap.
- Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.
- Remove the intermediate shaft from the transaxle together with the halfshaft and secure it to one side.





16. CAUTION: Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 18 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 45 degrees.

NOTE: Plug the transaxle to prevent oil loss or dirt ingress.

Remove the left-hand driveshaft from the transaxle secure it to one side.
- Using the special tool, loosen the driveshaft from the transaxle.
- Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.
- Discard the snap ring.





17. Remove the drive belt cover.
18. Lower the vehicle.





19. WARNING: Escaping brake fluid. Do not allow brake fluid to come into contact with the skin or the eyes. If brake fluid does come into contact with the skin or the eyes, rinse the affected areas with water immediately. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

CAUTION: If brake fluid is split on the paintwork, the affected area must be immediately washed down with cold water.

Remove the clutch slave cylinder supply line.
- Remove the clip.
- Remove the supply line and secure it to one side using cable ties.





20. Disconnect the reversing light switch connector.





21. Install the special tools (illustration shows battery installed).





22. Remove the engine rear mount.
23. Lower the engine and transaxle assembly slightly using special tool 303-290.





24. Remove the engine rear mount bracket.





25. Remove the two transaxle upper flange bolts.





26. NOTE: Do not disconnect the starter motor.

Loosen the starter motor.
- Remove the three bolts (two bolts shown).
- Secure the starter motor to one side using cable ties.
27. Raise the vehicle.





28. Remove the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) electrical connector.





29. Push the engine and transaxle assembly forwards and insert an approximately 350 mm long wooden block between the engine and the crossmember.





30. Position a transaxle jack under the transaxle and secure it with a retaining strap.





31. Remove the transaxle lower flange bolts (five bolts).





32. Remove the remaining transaxle flange bolts (four bolts).
33. Remove the transaxle from the engine and lower it using a transmission jack.
