Battery Cable: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

WARNING:
^ BATTERIES NORMALLY PRODUCE EXPLOSIVE GASES WHICH CAN CAUSE PERSONAL INJURY. THEREFORE, DO NOT ALLOW FLAMES, SPARKS OR LIGHTED SUBSTANCES TO COME NEAR THE BATTERY. WHEN CHARGING OR WORKING NEAR A BATTERY, ALWAYS SHIELD YOUR FACE AND PROTECT YOUR EYES. ALWAYS PROVIDE VENTILATION.
^ KEEP OUT OF THE REACH OF CHILDREN. BATTERIES CONTAIN SULFURIC ACID. AVOID CONTACT WITH SKIN, EYES OR CLOTHING. ALSO, SHIELD YOUR EYES WHEN WORKING NEAR THE BATTERY TO PROTECT AGAINST POSSIBLE SPLASHING OF THE ACID SOLUTION. IN CASE OF ACID CONTACT WITH THE SKIN OR EYES, FLUSH IMMEDIATELY WITH WATER FOR A MINIMUM OF 15 MINUTES AND GET PROMPT MEDICAL ATTENTION. IF ACID IS SWALLOWED, CALL A PHYSICIAN IMMEDIATELY.


All cables
1. Remove the battery.

Battery/intermediate positive cables







2. Remove the nut and the positive cables from the Battery Junction Box (BJB).

Battery negative cable







3. Remove the bolt and the negative cable.
^ Remove the pin-type retainer from the battery tray.

Intermediate positive cable







4. Detach the positive cable from the rear wire harness in the luggage compartment.
5. If equipped, remove the removable top.
6. Position the convertible top in the closed and unlatched position.







7. Detach the interior trim cover, and position aside to expose the positive cable.







8. Disconnect the rear window defrost grid electrical connector.
9. Remove the RH A-pillar lower trim panel.







10. Remove the speaker grille and position the RH rear quarter trim panel aside.







11. Remove the nut and disconnect the positive cable end.
^ Remove the protective cover.

NOTE: Position the carpet and the dash insulator foam aside to disconnect the positive cable end.







12. Remove the screws and open the plastic channel.
13. Detach the positive cable at the cable pin-type retainers wire harness, feed the cable back through the support structure brackets toward the rear of the vehicle and remove the positive cable through the luggage compartment.

CAUTION: Care must be taken while removing the positive cable due to the body structure support brackets having sharp edges.

14. Remove the pin-type retainers and rear fender splash shield.







15. Disconnect the starter positive cable at the dash panel through-bolt.
^ Remove the protective cover.
^ Remove the nut.
^ Disconnect the electrical connector.







16. Remove the bolt and position the ground cable aside.







17. Remove the bolts and the harness protective cover.
^ Cut the tie straps.

NOTE: Install new wire tie straps.







18. Remove the nut and the starter ground cable.







19. Remove the cable protective cover at the starter solenoid, the nuts and detach the cable.







20. Remove the radiator RH lower air deflector.
1 Remove the screws.
2 Remove the pin-type retainer.







21. Detach the pin-type retainer that supports the B+ cable.







22. Remove the generator B+ nut and the cable, starter to generator harness assembly.

INSTALLATION

All cables
1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
