Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

1. Remove cam cover.
2. Remove EGR pipe clamp at rear of cylinder head.
3. Raise and support vehicle.
4. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold.
5. Lower vehicle, drain cooling system and disconnect heater hoses.
6. Remove A/C compressor and/or power steering pump, and position aside.
7. Disconnect accelerator linkage and fuel line at carburetor, all necessary electrical connections, spark plug wires and necessary vacuum lines.
8. Rotate crankshaft until No. 4 cylinder is in firing position. Remove distributor cap and mark rotor to housing relationship, then remove distributor.
9. Remove fuel pump.
10. Lock shoe on timing chain automatic adjuster in fully retracted position by depressing the adjuster lock lever with a screwdriver or equivalent in direction as indicated, Fig. 2.
11. Remove timing sprocket to camshaft bolt. Remove sprocket and fuel pump drive cam from the camshaft. Do not remove the sprocket from the chain.
12. Disconnect AIR hose and check valve at air manifold.
13. Remove cylinder head to timing cover bolts.
14. Remove cylinder head bolts using tool J-24239-01, or equivalent. Remove outer bolts first.
15. With an assistant, remove cylinder head, intake and exhaust manifold as an assembly.
16. Clean all gasket material from cylinder head and block surfaces.Gasket surfaces on both head and block must be clean of all foreign matter and free of nicks or heavy scratches. Cylinder bolt threads in the block and threads on the bolts must be cleaned, as dirt will affect bolt torque.
17. Reverse procedure to install and tighten head bolts to specifications in sequence, Fig. 3.
