Engine: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Scribe reference marks in the hood hinge area, then remove hood.
3. Drain cooling system, then remove radiator hoses, overflow hose, transmission cooler lines (if equipped), upper radiator shroud and radiator.
4. Remove cooling fan, then disconnect heater hoses.
5. Remove air cleaner assembly.
6. Identify, then disconnect vacuum hoses from engine.
7. Disconnect necessary engine wiring from bulkhead.
8. Disconnect throttle linkage as necessary, then remove distributor cap.
9. Raise and support vehicle.
10. Remove converter to exhaust pipe bolts, then disconnect exhaust pipes at manifolds.
11. Remove strut rods at bellhousing (if equipped).
12. Remove flywheel cover bolts, then the cover.
13. On models equipped with automatic transmission, remove torque converter bolts.
14. On all models, disconnect shield at rear of catalytic converter, then remove converter hanger.
15. Remove lower radiator fan shroud.
16. Disconnect fuel lines from fuel pump.
17. Remove two outer bolts from front air deflector.
18. Remove left side body mount bolts, then raise body using suitable lifting equipment.
19. Remove bellhousing bolts, then lower body to frame.
20. Remove motor mount through bolts, then lower vehicle.
21. If equipped with A/C or power steering, disconnect A/C compressor and/or power steering pump.
22. Install suitable lifting device on engine.
23. Support transmission with suitable jack.
24. Remove engine assembly.
25. Reverse procedure to install.

Man. Trans.

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Scribe reference marks in hood hinge area, then disconnect under hood light and remove hood.
3. Remove air cleaner assembly.
4. Drain cooling system, then remove radiator hoses, overflow hose, upper fan shroud, radiator, cooling fan and fan clutch.
5. Remove A/C compressor (if equipped) and position aside.
6. Remove power steering pump (if equipped) and position aside.
7. Disconnect fuel lines from fuel pump.
8. Identify, then disconnect vacuum hoses from engine.
9. Disconnect throttle linkage as necessary, then remove heater hoses.
10. Disconnect engine wiring harness at bulkhead connector, then the ground strap at bulkhead.
11. On 1982-83 models, disconnect clutch cable, then remove clutch cross shaft. On 1984-87 models, remove hydraulic clutch slave cylinder and position aside.
12. On all models, remove lower radiator fan shroud.
13. Disconnect battery ground cable from engine, then the main feed wire from bulkhead.
14. Remove distributor cap, then the AIR system diverter valve.
15. Remove console cover, shifter boot, transfer case shifter, transmission shift lever and shifter.
16. Raise and support vehicle, then remove front and rear skid plates and front splash shield.
17. Drain transmission and transfer case, then remove rear driveshaft.
18. Disconnect speedometer cable, then the front driveshaft from transfer case.
19. Disconnect shift linkage and vacuum hoses from transfer case.
20. Disconnect parking brake cable, then remove rear mount.
21. Remove catalytic converter bracket, then support transfer case.
22. Remove transfer case to transmission retaining bolts, then the transfer case.
23. Remove transmission crossmember, then disconnect back-up light switch wire and clip.
24. Remove transmission to bellhousing retaining bolts, then the transmission.
25. Remove clutch release bearing and inspection cover from bellhousing.
26. Remove left hand body mount bolts, then loosen radiator support to frame mount bolt.
27. Raise left side of body using suitable lifting equipment, then install a block of wood between frame and body.
28. On 1982-83 models, disconnect remaining clutch linkage.
29. On all models, remove bellhousing to engine block retaining bolts, then the bellhousing.
30. Disconnect exhaust pipes from manifolds, then from the catalytic converter.
31. Remove starter motor.
32. Remove motor mount through bolts.
33. Lower vehicle.
34. Install suitable lifting device on engine.
35. Remove engine assembly.
36. Reverse procedure to install.
Auto. Trans.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Scribe reference marks in the hood hinge area, then disconnect under hood light and remove hood.
3. Raise and support vehicle.
4. Remove front end air dam end bolts.
5. Remove body mount bolts as necessary to enable body to be raised to gain access to top transmission mounting bolts.
6. Remove top transmission mounting bolts, then lower body.
7. Remove remaining transmission mounting bolts, then the second crossmember.
8. Disconnect exhaust pipes at manifolds, then the catalytic converter hanger.
9. Disconnect front driveshaft from differential.
10. Remove torque converter cover bolts, then the cover.
11. Disconnect transmission cooler lines from clips on engine.
12. Remove motor mount through bolts.
13. Remove torque converter to flex plate bolts.
14. Remove front splash shield, then the lower radiator fan shroud mounting bolts.
15. Lower vehicle.
16. Drain cooling system, then remove upper fan shroud, radiator hoses, transmission cooler lines at radiator, radiator and cooling fan.
17. Remove air cleaner assembly.
18. Remove A/C compressor (if equipped) and position aside.
19. Remove power steering pump (if equipped) and position aside.
20. Disconnect fuel lines from fuel pump.
21. Identify, then disconnect all necessary vacuum lines, wires and emission hoses.
22. Disconnect throttle linkage as necessary.
23. Disconnect engine wiring harness at bulkhead.
24. Disconnect heater hoses at engine.
25. Support transmission with suitable jack.
26. Install suitable lifting device on engine.
27. Remove engine assembly.
28. Reverse procedure to install.
