Removal and Replacement

1. Open hood and place fender covers on both fenders.

2. Remove air cleaner assembly.

3. Disconnect T.V. cable at its upper end.

4. Raise and support vehicle.

5. Remove propeller shaft.

6. Disconnect speedometer cable at the transmission.

7. Disconnect shift linkage at transmission.

8. Disconnect all electrical leads at the transmission and any clips that retain the leads to the transmission case.

9. If equipped, remove transmission support brace attaching bolts at converter cover.

10. Remove converter cover and mark flywheel and torque converter to maintain original balance.

11. Remove exhaust crossover pipe and catalytic converter attaching bolts and remove as an assembly from vehicle.

12. Remove torque converter cover, then mark relationship between flywheel and torque converter for reference during installation.

13. Remove torque converter to flywheel bolts and/or nuts.

14. Disconnect the catalytic converter support bracket

15. Position a transmission jack under the transmission and raise the transmission slightly.

16. Remove transmission support to transmission mount bolt and transmission support to frame bolts (and insulators if used).

17. Slide the transmission support rearward.

18. Lower the transmission to gain access to the oil cooler lines and T.V. cable attachments.

19. Disconnect the oil cooler lines and T.V. cable. Cap all openings.

20. Support engine with a suitable tool and remove the transmission to the engine bolts.

21. Disconnect the transmission assembly, being careful not to damage any cables, lines or linkage.

22. Install torque converter holding tool J-21366 and remove the transmission assembly from the vehicle.

23. To install, reverse the removal procedure, and note the following:

a. Before installing the flex plate to converter bolts, make certain that the weld nuts on the converter are flush with the flex plate and the converter rotates freely by hand in this position.

b. Hand start the bolts and tighten finger tight, then torque to 35 ft. lbs. This will ensure proper converter alignment. Install new oil filler tube O-ring before installing tube.
