Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

Fig. 9 Cylinder head tightening sequence:

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove rocker arms and pushrods. Refer to ``Rocker Arms, Replace.''
3. Drain radiator coolant, then disconnect radiator hose from cylinder head.
4. Remove heater tube.
5. Disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold, then remove vacuum pump.
6. If equipped with air conditioning, remove A/C compressor and bracket and position aside.
7. Disconnect heater hose and bracket.
8. Disconnect PCV hose and position aside, then the oil dipstick and dipstick tube.
9. Disconnect necessary electrical wiring from engine and accessories.
10. Disconnect injection lines.Cover all open injection lines to prevent entry of dirt.
11. Disconnect breather pipe and the oil jet pipe.
12. Disconnect fuel return hose.
13. Remove cylinder head bolts, then the cylinder head.
14. Position new gasket on engine block with ``TOP'' side of gasket facing up.
15. Apply engine oil to sealing faces and threads of cylinder head bolts, then install cylinder head and bolts. Torque bolts in sequence shown in Fig. 9 to values given in specifications at beginning of chapter.
