Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove air cleaner and drain cooling system.
3. Raise and support vehicle.
4. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold, then lower vehicle.
5. Disconnect accelerator linkage and any necessary wires and vacuum lines.
6. Remove fuel vapor canister harness lines, Fig. 1.
7. Remove distributor cap and distributor. Mark position of distributor for reference during installation.
8. Remove rocker arm cover, then the rocker arms and pushrods.
9. Remove radiator and heater hoses.
10. Remove upper fan shroud, then the fan.
11. Remove air management valve, then the air pump and upper AIR bracket.
12. Remove fuel line from fuel pump.
13. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts, then the cylinder head. Disconnect wires from rear of head.
14. Reverse procedure to install. Coat cylinder head gasket and bolts with suitable sealant and install bolts finger tight. Torque bolts to specifications in sequence shown in Fig. 2.
