Passenger Car Engine Production Code Explanation

Chevrolet produced engines will be stamped with a source, production date and engine suffix. Other General Motors produced engines used in Chevrolet vehicles will use a label affixed to the engine assembly.

ENGINE CODE LOCATIONS

L4 1.6L

The code is stamped on a pad on the right side of the engine below the number one cylinder parallel to the cylinder case deck.


L4 2.0L

The engine suffix and build date is steel stamped on a horizontal machined surface on the left rear side of the cylinder case under the exhaust manifold.


L4 2.5L

The code is on a sticker placed on the timing gear cover and is also stamped on the block, water pump end, just below the cylinder head. This is a three letter alpha-numeric code indicating engine type.


V6 2.8L

The code is stamped on a horizontal machined surface on the block just forward of the intake manifold.

V6 3.8L 231 CID (Front Mounted Distributor)

Located on the front face of the R.H. cylinder head on a paper label. Also traceability label on inboard side of L.H. rocker arm cover.


V6 3.8L 229 CID (Rear Mounted Distributor)

Stamped on cylinder case pad immediately forward of the right cylinder head.


V6 4.3L 262 CID (Diesel)

Label located on rear of L.H. rocker arm cover.


V8 5.7L 350 CID (Diesel)

The code is on a label located on flat surface on L.H. rocker arm cover.


V8 5.0L and 5.7L

Stamped on cylinder case pad immediately forward of the right cylinder head.

NOTICE: In addition, all passenger car engines (except 3.8L 231 CID) will have a portion of the vehicle identification number stamped near the engine production code, usually near the right hand side of the cylinder case. This condensed identification number consists of the division number, model year, assembly plant designation and vehicle build sequence number.
