SUBJECT: SLIPPING CONDITION - LOSS OF DRIVE RANGE

MODELS: 1982-86 LD MODELS WITH THM 700-R4 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS
Some 1982 through 1986 THM 700-R4 transmissions may exhibit a slipping or loss of drive range condition. This condition may be caused by belling or flaring of the reverse input housing and reaction sun shell due to latching of the forward clutch sprag assembly..

Beginning on June 12, 1985, or Julian date 163 (refer to Figure No. 1), a new forward clutch sprag assembly, P/N 8663677, went into production. When servicing a 1982 through 1986 THM 700-R4 transmission for a slipping or loss of drive condition, replace the forward clutch sprag assembly with the new service inspect the tangs between the reverse input housing and reaction sun shell for a belled condition, and replace the reverse input housing, P/N 8642943, or reaction sun shell, P/N 8642203, if damage is evident.
