Removal and Replacement

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove air cleaner assembly.
3. Disconnect TV cable at its upper end.
4. On models equipped with 4-119 engine, remove starter motor upper retaining nut.
5. On all models, raise and support vehicle.
6. Remove propeller shaft from vehicle.
7. Disconnect speedometer cable, shift linkage assembly and electrical connectors from transmission.
8. Remove transmission support brace attaching bolts from converter cover, if equipped.
9. Remove converter cover, then mark flywheel and torque converter for installation.
10. Remove exhaust crossover pipe and catalytic converter attaching bolts from vehicle.
11. Remove torque converter to flywheel bolts and/or nuts.
12. Disconnect catalytic converter support bracket.
13. Position a suitable jack under transmission and raise transmission slightly.
14. Remove transmission crossmember to transmission mount bolt.
15. Remove transmission crossmember to frame bolts and/or insulators, if equipped.
16. Slide crossmember rearward and remove from vehicle.
17. Lower transmission.
18. Disconnect and cap transmission fluid cooler lines.
19. Disconnect TV cable from transmission.
20. Position a suitable jack under engine, then remove transmission to engine attaching bolts.
21. Carefully separate transmission from engine. Install torque converter holding fixture tool No. J-21366.
22. Remove transmission from vehicle.
23. To install transmission, reverse removal procedure and note the following:
a. Before installing torque converter to flywheel bolts, ensure weld nuts on torque converter are flush with flywheel and torque converter rotates freely by hand in this position.
b. Hand start, then finger tighten the bolts. Torque bolts to 35 ft. lbs. This will ensure proper torque converter alignment.
c. Install a new oil filler tube onto transmission.
