SUBJECT: LUBRICANT SEEPAGE FROM MANUAL STEERING GEAR

MODELS: 1986-87 S-10
Some 1986-87 Model S-10 trucks with manual steering may experience lubricant seepage from the adjuster plug. To repair this condition the following procedure should be performed.

Notice: This repair is to be done without removing the gear from the vehicle.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Mark position of the adjuster plug on gear housing to insure proper positioning after repair.

2. Remove adjuster plug locknut from the gear

3. Back off adjuster two complete turns until mark on adjuster plug and housing line up.

4. Clean adjuster plug threads closest to the housing, housing edge and adjuster plug locknut with locktite safety solvent 75559 or equivalent (Figure No. 1).

5. Apply a continuous bead of GM sealant 1052080 or equivalent on the entire diameter of the adjuster plug threads (Figure No. 2).

6. Tighten the adjuster plug two complete turns until the mark on the adjuster plug and the housing line up.

7. Now apply a continuous bead of sealant where the housing and adjuster plug meet (Figure No. 2).

8. Install the adjuster plug locknut and tighten to (95 ft.lbs.) 130 N-m, being sure adjuster plug does not move while tightening locknut.

9. Check lube level and add as required.
