A/T - 2-3 Flare-up, or Repeated 3-4 Clutch Failure

TSB 87-6 (Jan)

SUBJECT: 700 R4

PROBLEM: 2-3 Flare-up, or repeated 3-4 Clutch Failure

CAUSES: The following are common causes

1. BAND ADJUSTMENT; Use proper tool. If the proper tool isn't available, achieve 1/16" to 1/8" servo travel.

2. 2-3 ACCUMULATOR; This is the checkball capsule visible in the case, after removing the 2-4 servo. To check for a leak, pour solvent into the case (as in Figure 1) with servo assembled in the case. Look for a leak inside the case (Figure 2). Replace capsule if necessary, with part # 8634400.

3. 3-4 CLUTCH PACK CLEARANCE; It should be .070" to .110". The 3-4 pressure plate is available in selective thickness to adjust clutch pack clearance. (See Figure 3)

4. AIR CHECK THE 3-4 CLUTCH PACK; Watch for a leak at the checkball in the input drum, and cracks in the input shaft.

5. AIR CHECK THE 3-4 CLUTCH PACK with the input drum installed in the pump. While air checking through the pump, look for leaks at the cup plug, or the check ball in the pump. (See Figure 4)

6. The only sealing rings that seal 3-4 clutch oil are the large sealing ring on the 2nd servo piston, and the two rear sealing rings on the input shaft.
