Oil Pan: Service and Repair

Oil Pan Installation:




REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Dipstick.
3. Drive belt splash shield.
^ Raise the vehicle.
4. Front axle shield.
5. Transfer case shield.
6. Brake line clips at the crossmember.
7. Second crossmember.
8. Converter hanger bolts and exhaust pipe clamp at the converter (automatic transmission only).
9. Exhaust pipes at manifolds and slide the pipe rearward (automatic transmission only).
10. Front propeller shaft at the drive pinion.
11. Engine braces at the flywheel cover and loosen the braces at the block.
12. Flywheel cover.
13. Starter motor bolts.
14. Starter motor.
^ Lay the starter motor aside.
15. Steering shock absorber at the frame bracket.
16. Steering gear bolts.
^ Mark the position of the idler arm for installation.
17. Idler arm attaching bolts.
18. Differential housing mounting bolts at the bracket on the right side and at the frame on the left side.
^ Pull the steering gear and linkage forward.
^ Move the differential housing forward.
19. Motor mount through bolts.
20. Oil from the oil pan.
21. Oil pan bolts.
22. Oil pan.
^ Raise the engine.

CLEAN
Sealing surfaces on the engine and oil pan.

CAUTION Before installing the oil pan, check that the sealing surfaces on the pan, cylinder case, and front cover are clean and free of oil. Make sure that all RTV is removed from blind attaching holes.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. A 3 mm (1/8-inch) bead of RTV sealant (GM Part No. 1052366 or equivalent) on the entire oil pan sealing flange.
2. Oil pan to the cylinder block.
3. Bolts and studs.
Tighten
^ Bolts (35) to 14 Nm (10 ft. lbs.).
^ Bolts (36) to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).
4. Motor mount through bolts.
5. Differential housing mounting bolts.
6. Idler arm attaching bolts.
7. Steering gear bolts.
8. Steering shock absorber at the frame bracket.
9. Starter motor.
10. Starter motor bolts.
11. Flywheel cover.
12. Engine braces at the flywheel cover.
13. Front propeller shaft to the drive pinion.
14. Exhaust pipes to the manifolds.
15. Converter hanger bolts and exhaust pipe clamp at the converter.
16. Second crossmember.
17. Brake line clips at the crossmember.
18. Transfer case shield.
19. Front axle shield.
20. Drive belt splash shield.
21. Dipstick.
^ Lower the vehicle.
22. Oil into the crankcase.
23. Negative battery cable.
