Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

RIGHT SIDE
1985---86
1. Remove intake manifold as described under ``Intake Manifold, Replace.''
2. Raise and support vehicle.
3. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold, then lower vehicle.
4. Remove spark plug wires, PCV hose and oil filler tube.
5. Disconnect air injection pipe and electrical connector from rear of cylinder head.
6. Remove engine ground wire from rear of cylinder head.
7. Remove valve cover, then the spark plugs.
8. Remove alternator lower mounting bolt, then remove alternator and position aside.
9. Remove pushrods, then the cylinder head attaching bolts and cylinder head.
10. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. On engine using a steel gasket, apply a suitable sealant to both sides of gasket.
b. On engines using a steel asbestos gasket, do not use any sealant on gasket.
c. Apply suitable sealant to cylinder head bolt threads prior to installation.
d. Torque cylinder head attaching bolts to specifications in sequence shown, Fig. 2.

1. Remove intake manifold as described under ``Intake Manifold, Replace.''
2. Disconnect electrical harness from valve cover, then remove the valve cover and pushrods.
3. Raise and support vehicle.
4. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.
5. Disconnect air injection hoses and exhaust manifold from cylinder head, then lower vehicle.
6. On models equipped with power steering, remove power steering pump.
7. On models equipped with A/C, remove A/C compressor idler pulley and compressor mounting bracket.
8. On all models, disconnect spark plug wires from cylinder head and remove spark plugs.
9. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts and the cylinder head.
10. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. On engines using a steel gasket, apply a suitable sealant to both sides of gasket.
b. On engines using a steel asbestos gasket, do not use any sealant on gasket.
c. Apply suitable sealant to cylinder head bolt threads prior to installation.
d. Torque cylinder head attaching bolts to specifications in sequence shown, Fig. 2.
