1. Remove intake manifold.
2. Remove alternator lower mounting bolt, then position alternator aside.
3. Remove exhaust manifold.
4. Remove rocker arm cover, rocker arms and pushrods.
5. Drain coolant from cylinder block, then remove diverter valve, if equipped.
6. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts, then the cylinder head. Before installing cylinder head, check gasket surfaces on both head and block for nicks or heavy scratches. Bolt threads in block and threads on head bolts must be clean as dirt will affect bolt torque.
7. On engines using steel gasket, coat both sides of gasket using suitable sealer. On engines equipped with steel/asbestos type gasket, no sealer should be used.
8. Place gasket in position over dowel pins, then carefully lower cylinder head into place.
9. Coat threads of cylinder head bolts with suitable sealer, then install bolts finger tight.
10. Tighten each bolt a little at a time in sequence shown in Fig. 15 until specified torque is reached.
11. Install intake manifold, then torque bolts to specification in sequence shown in Fig. 10.
12. Install exhaust manifold.
13. Install valve train, then adjust valves as outlined in ``Valves, Adjust'' procedure.
