Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
Tightening Sequence For Cylinder Head:
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. On G models, remove engine cover.
3. On all models, drain cooling system, then remove intake and exhaust manifolds as previously described.
4. If removing right side cylinder head on R and V models, proceed as follows:
a. Disconnect ground strap from rear of cylinder head.
b. Remove AIR pipe from rear of cylinder head.
c. Disconnect spark plug wires from support brackets.
d. Unfasten alternator and position aside.
5. If removing left side cylinder head on R and V models, proceed as follows:
a. On models equipped with A/C compressor, unfasten compressor and front bracket and position aside.
b. On models equipped with power steering, unfasten power steering pump and position aside.
c. On all models, disconnect coolant sensor electrical connector.
d. Disconnect spark plug wires from support brackets.
e. Disconnect AIR pipe from rear of cylinder head.
6. If removing right side cylinder head on G models with fuel injected engine, proceed as follows:
a. Disconnect ground strap from rear of cylinder head.
b. Remove AIR pump bolt and spacer from cylinder head.
c. On models equipped with A/C, remove A/C compressor nut and stud from cylinder head.
d. Disconnect fuel pipe and plug wire, then remove wiring harness brackets from rear of cylinder head.
7. If removing left side cylinder head on G models with fuel injected engine, proceed as follows:
a. Remove main accessory bracket nut and stud from cylinder head. Remaining studs and bolts may need to be loosened to move bracket forward to allow removal removal of cylinder head.
b. Disconnect coolant sensor electrical connector.
c. Remove cruise control transducer, if equipped, and spark plug wire brackets from rear of cylinder head.
8. On models equipped with carbureted engine, proceed as follows:
a. If removing left side cylinder head, unfasten A/C compressor and bracket, if equipped, and position aside.
b. If removing right side cylinder head, unfasten alternator and position aside.
9. On all models, remove rocker arm cover, then the spark plugs and pushrods.
10. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts and the cylinder head.
11. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Thoroughly clean block and head mating surfaces.
b. Install new head gasket over block dowel pins with bead up. If using a steel gasket, apply a thin, even coat of sealer to both sides of gasket. If using a composition gasket, do not use any sealer.
c. Coat cylinder head bolt threads with a suitable sealing compound.
d. Install head bolts finger tight, then torque in sequence, Fig. 18, to specifications.
