Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

1. Remove intake manifold as previously described.
2. If removing right side cylinder head, proceed as follows:
a. Unfasten alternator and position aside.
b. On models equipped with fuel injected engine, remove AIR pump, then the AIR pump/alternator bracket.
3. Remove exhaust manifold as previously described.
4. On models equipped with A/C, unfasten A/C compressor and bracket and position aside.
5. On all models, remove rocker arm cover, then the spark plugs.
6. On models equipped with fuel injected engine, remove AIR pipe bolts from rear of cylinder head.
7. On all models, disconnect ground strap from rear of cylinder head.
8. Remove pushrods, then the cylinder head attaching bolts and cylinder head.
9. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Thoroughly clean block and head mating surfaces.
b. Install new head gasket over block dowel pins with bead up. If using a steel gasket, apply a thin, even coat of sealer to both sides of gasket. If using a composition gasket, do not use any sealer.
c. Coat cylinder head bolt threads with a suitable sealing compound,
d. Install head bolts finger tight, then torque in sequence, Fig. 19, to specifications.
