Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold / Service and Repair. Service and Repair
2. Coolant from the engine block.
3. Raise the vehicle.
4. Exhaust pipe.
5. Dipstick tube attachment (left side only).
6. Generator bracket (right side only).
7. Lower the vehicle.
8. Pushrods. Refer to Push Rod / Service and Repair. Service and Repair
9. Loosen the rocker arms.
10. Head bolts.
11. Cylinder head.
12. Head gasket.
CLEAN
^ Carbon deposits from combustion chambers.
^ All traces of old head gasket from the cylinder head and block.
^ Cylinder head bolt threads and threads in the block.
INSPECT
^ Sealing surfaces of the block and cylinder head for nicks, heavy scratches, or other damage.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Gasket in place over the dowel pins with the note "This Side Up" showing.
2. Cylinder head.
^ Gasket must be fully seated on the block before head installation.
3. Sealer (GM Part No. 1052080 or equivalent) to the head bolt threads.
4. Head bolts.
Tighten
^ Head bolts in the sequence shown to 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.).
5. Pushrods. Refer to Push Rod / Service and Repair. Service and Repair
^ Make sure the lower end of the pushrod seats in the lifter.
^ Loosely retain the pushrods with the rocker arm.
6. Intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold / Service and Repair. Service and Repair
7. Exhaust pipe.
^ Raise the vehicle.
8. Dipstick tube bracket (left side only).
9. Adjust valve lash. Refer to Valve, Intake/Exhaust / Adjustments. Adjustments
10. Lower the vehicle.
11. Generator bracket (right side only).
