Engine: Service and Repair


1. Disconnect battery ground cable, mark position of hood hinges and remove hood.
2. Disconnect power steering reservoir from fan shroud, then remove upper shroud and fan.
3. Drain coolant, then disconnect radiator hoses and overflow hose from radiator.
4. Disconnect transmission cooling lines from radiator, if equipped, then plug lines.
5. Remove radiator.
6. Remove A/C compressor and power steering pump from brackets and secure aside.
7. Remove air cleaner and disconnect fuel line bracket by filter.
8. Disconnect fuel lines and vacuum hoses, accelerator cable, and TV and cruise control cables, as equipped, then secure aside. To reduce risk of fire and injury, it is necessary to allow fuel system pressure to bleed off prior to disconnecting lines.
9. Disconnect heater hoses from engine.
10. Disconnect electrical connector to oxygen sensor and other engine mounted components, release engine harness from retainers and secure harness aside.
11. Raise and support vehicle.
12. On 2 wheel drive models, disconnect strut rods.
13. On 4 wheel drive models, proceed as follows:
a. Remove clips securing brake lines to crossmember, then the crossmember.
b. Disconnect transmission cooler lines at flywheel cover, if equipped.
c. Disconnect propeller shaft at front axle.
14. On all models, disconnect exhaust pipe at converter hanger and manifold, and secure aside.
15. Remove flywheel cover and drive belt splash shield, as equipped.
16. Remove starter motor.
17. Remove bolts securing torque converter to flex plate if equipped.
18. Remove 2 outer (left side) air dam bolts and the lower fan shroud.
19. Remove left body mount bolts, then position suitable jacks under body.
20. Carefully raise body and insert suitable block of wood between body and frame.
21. Remove upper bellhousing to engine bolts, then lower body onto block of wood.
22. Remove remaining bellhousing to engine bolts and motor mount through bolts, then lower vehicle.
23. Place suitable support under transmission and attach suitable lifting equipment to engine.
24. Raise engine and disconnect remaining wires, wire loom brackets at side cover and rear of head, and ground straps.
25. Separate engine from transmission and remove engine assembly from vehicle.
26. Reverse procedure to install.
