Oil Pump: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
1. Remove oil pan as previously described.
2. Remove oil pump attaching bolts, then the pump and screen as an assembly.

DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove 4 pump cover attaching screws, then the cover and gasket, idler gear, drive gear and shaft, Fig. 12.
2. Remove pressure regulator valve and valve components. Do not remove the oil pickup tube in relation to the pump body or screen.
INSPECTION
Inspect oil pump components. Should any of the following conditions be found, the pump assembly should be replaced.
1. Inspect pump body for cracks or excessive wear.
2. Inspect pump gears for damage, cracks or excessive wear.
3. Check shaft for looseness in housing.
4. Check interior of cover for wear that would allow oil to leak past ends of gears.
5. Inspect oil pickup screen and relief grommet for damage. Also, remove any debris from screen.
6. Ensure proper fit of valve plunger in body.
ASSEMBLY
1. Position drive gear and shaft in pump body, then install idler gear with smooth side of gear toward cover.
2. Install pump cover and gasket, if necessary, then torque attaching screws to 105 inch lbs. on 1985 models or 120 inch lbs. on 1986---87 models. Ensure shaft turns freely.
3. Install regulator valve plunger, spring, retainer and pin.
