Front Axle Shaft Replacement

FRONT AXLE SHAFT REPLACEMENT

NOTICE: All front axle fasteners are important attaching parts in that they could affect the performance of vital parts and systems, and/or could result in major repair expense. They must be replaced with one of the same part number or with an equivalent part if replacement becomes necessary. Do not use a replacement part of lesser quality or substitute design. Torque values must be used as specified during reassembly to assure proper retention of all parts.

Removal

1. Raise the vehicle and remove the wheel and tire assembly.
2. Remove Brake caliper (40).

Important: Support the brake caliper (40) so as not to stretch or damage the brake hose.

3. Remove Hub lock mechanism (20).
4. Remove Hub and rotor assembly.
5. Remove Inner bearing (31) and seal (32).
6. Remove Splash shield (41) and brake bracket (39).
7. Remove Spindle (38) from the steering knuckle.
8. Remove Axle shaft (46).
9. Clean all parts.
- Inner and outer wheel bearing (31 and 26).
- Hub and rotor assembly (28).
- Spindle (38) and spindle bearing (37).
10. Inspect all parts and replace as necessary.

Important:
- Lube the spindle bearing (37) and spindle (38) with the recommended lubricant.
- Pack the wheel hub and the inner and outer wheel bearing (31 and 26) with the recommended lubricant.

Installation

Axle Shaft Assembly:





1. Install seal (36) and spacer (35) to the axle shaft (46).
- The spacer's (35) chamfer points toward the oil deflector (33).
2. Install axle shaft (46) into the housing (42).
3. Install the spindle (38) to the knuckle (44). Be sure the seal (34) and oil deflector (33) are in place.
4. Install brake bracket (39).
5. Install splash shield (41).
6. Install new washers (46) and nuts (49) to the studs.

Tighten Nuts (49) to 88 Nm (65 ft. lbs.).

7. Install hub and rotor assembly (28).
- Adjust the wheel bearings (26 and 31).
8. Install retainer (22) and ring (21).
9. Install hub lock mechanism (20).
10. Install brake caliper (40).
- Do not stretch or damage the brake hose.
11. Install wheel and tire assembly.
12. Lower the vehicle and test.
