Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

Fig. 14 Cylinder head tightening sequence:

1. Remove necessary access covers.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Remove manifolds as previously described.
4. Disconnect fuel line, wire and vacuum harness from clips in rocker arm cover.
5. Remove air check valve.
6. Remove spark plug wires from spark plugs.
7. Remove rocker arm cover, then back off rocker arm nuts, pivot rocker arms to clear pushrods and remove pushrods. Store pushrods in order of removal for proper installation.
8. Drain cooling system, then disconnect upper radiator hose, heater hose and water pump bypass hoses.
9. Remove battery ground strap from cylinder head.
10. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts, then the cylinder head and gasket.
11. Reverse procedure to install and tighten head bolts to specifications in sequence shown in Fig. 14.
