Oil Pump: Service and Repair

Fig. 11 Oil Pump Assembly:

REMOVAL
1. Remove oil pan as previously described.
2. Remove oil pump attaching bolts, pump, then screen as an assembly.

DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove four pump cover attaching screws, cover and gasket.
2. Mark the gear teeth prior to removal so the pump gears can be installed with the same gear teeth indexed.
3. Remove idler gear, drive gear, then the shaft, Fig. 11.
4. Remove pressure regulator valve and valve components. Do not remove the oil pickup tube in relation to the pump body or screen.

INSPECTION
Inspect oil pump components. Should any of the following conditions be found, the pump assembly should be replaced.
1. Inspect pump body for cracks or excessive wear.
2. Inspect pump gears for damage, cracks or excessive wear.
3. Check drive gear and shaft for looseness in housing.
4. Check interior of cover for wear that would allow oil to leak past ends of gears.
5. Inspect oil pickup screen and relief grommet for damage. Also, remove any debris from screen.
6. Ensure proper fit of pressure relief valve plunger in body. Valve should slide freely in bore without sticking.
7. Check pickup tube for looseness causing an air leak and loss of oil pressure.

ASSEMBLY
1. Position drive gear and shaft in pump body using index marks made prior to disassembly, then install idler gear with smooth side of gear toward cover opening.
2. Install pump cover and gasket if necessary. Tighten attaching screws to specifications. Ensure shaft turns freely.
3. Install regulator valve plunger, spring, retainer and pin.
